As we head towards the July 31st trade deadline, here are 5 names that are part of my wishlist for the Dodgers.
1. Garrett Crochet P (CHW)
He’s the name that has been linked to the Dodgers for a while, which is not a surprise given that we need rotation depth, and he has had a stellar season for Chicago. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, contract talks did not seem to go very far between the two parties, and a trade seems imminent.
Crochet has a 6-6 record on the season with a 3.08 ERA (17th in MLB), 146K (1st in MLB), and a 0.97 WHIP (5th in MLB). He would go a long way in helping to stabilize a Dodgers starting rotation that has been riddled with injuries and inconsistencies. Hope that Chicago recognizes where they are and not try to hard ball but find a good deal that works for both teams.
2. Randy Arozarena OF (TB)
I know. He’s having a terrible season. BUT, nothing that a little California sunshine and the Dodgers great coaching staff can’t fix right? The biggest appeal to me is that he is a big time player who won’t be afraid of the bright lights. It’s definitely a bet on what he has been as he is hitting .201 on the season with only 11HRs and 29 RBIs up to this point of the season.
But I’m optimistic that he can turn it around after the All-Star break and might be a good buy-low opportunity for the Dodgers, who just might be able to rekindle the magic he had in 2020. That being said, Teoscar Hernandez is a lock in left field so Randy may be no more than a spot starter or an occasional DH, but getting a bat who has produced in the post season before would be a great grab for the Dodgers.
3. Tarik Skubal P (DET)
I’m still not 100% sure he is on the trade market. But I’m 100% sure that I would love for him to be on the Dodgers. He currently has a 10-3 record with a 2.37 ERA (4th in MLB), 132 Ks (5th in MLB), and a 0.90 WHIP (1st in MLB), and is just coming off a 13K performance against the Cincinnati Reds. As recently as yesterday, Jackson Roberts at The Sporting News wrote an article linking the Atlanta Braves to Skubal, which I will go crazy if that happens. Looking at some Detroit Tigers subreddits, it does not seem like the fans are in favor of trading Skubal, but it comes down to management and wanting to spend the money, which we know is something the Dodgers do not have issues with.
4. Abraham Toro (OAK)
Maybe a name that not many people are familiar with, but he’s a solid utility player (who can play 3B) and will not break the bank! His numbers are not overwhelming with a .260 average (69th in MLB), 6HRs and 24 RBIs on the season so far. He is also currently on the 10-day IL and last played a game on June 21. The concern is that he may not do much to help the bottom half of the lineup, but .260 is looking a whole lot better than what Chris Taylor or Gavin Lux have been showing up to this point in the season. But he’s only making $1.35M on the season and finding value at that low of a cost is always something a team should strive to do.
5. Mason Miller (OAK)
Is it probably? No. BUT, getting Mason Miller continues to be a move that I hope that Dodgers front office is considering. Mid-June I would have said that he would be a luxury for a dominant bullpen, halfway through July I would say that he might be a key piece to make sure that we can shut down teams in the post season. The main draw for me is that Mason Miller has “stuff” that nobody in our bullpen really has. His velocity is elite stuff and his combination of four-seamer and slider are devastating when he is on his game and would make the endings of games a lot less stressful for Dodgers fans.
